Narrative:
Approaching oxi inbound to chicago we were given a frequency change. I checked on at FL310. The controller asked if we were cleared to FL250. I replied negative. A short while later he came back and said the previous controller said he gave us 35 mi east of oxi at FL250. I told him neither one of us heard it. Either the controller thought he gave it to us and did not, or the first officer missed it while I was making a PA. There was no traffic conflict that I know of.
