Narrative:
We were told to enter an upwind for runway 31 at sun by tower and report abeam tower. We did report, but the tower said he had wanted us on a left upwind and a left downwind, although he had not stated that to us. We had entered a right upwind for a left crosswind to a left downwind for runway 31. I think ATC should advise you of what they want if they expect nonstandard pattern entry.
