Narrative:

Civet arrival to lax, level at FL180, 5 mi east of civet, we were cleared to descend via the civet arrival. We began our descent immediately so as to cross civet below 17000 ft when ATC called our 'VFR traffic 12 O'clock position, 5 mi, eastbound at 17500 ft.' the traffic appeared on TCASII and the TCASII RA commanded a climb of 2000-2500 FPM. We followed the TCASII guidance and passed above and beside the traffic with 100 ft vertical and 300 ft horizontal separation -- close enough to clearly see the king air pilots. ATC apologized for not calling out the VFR traffic any earlier. We resumed our descent and the remainder of the flight was routine.
