Narrative:
Descending from FL230 a buzzing vibration could be felt through the aircraft. Flight attendants reported pronounced vibration in aft cabin. The left engine vibration monitor picked up the vibration. Retarding the left throttle to idle had no effect, however, advancing it slightly caused the vibration to cease. With approach control, the left oil strainer clogging light illuminated with no other abnormal indications. Throttle was retarded per QRH, yet the light remained illuminated. An emergency was declared and equipment requested as a precaution. Due to proximity of airport and in order to avoid developing further unusual circumstances, the decision was made to land the aircraft and then shut the engine down at the completion of the landing roll. Maintenance found the oil strainer completely clogged with metal and on a subsequent maintenance runup for troubleshooting, the engine vibrated severely at 18% N2. The start was aborted, the engine to be removed.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: AN MD80 IN DSCNT AT FL230 DECLARED AN EMER AND LANDED DUE TO #1 ENG HIGH VIBRATION AND OIL CLOG LIGHT ILLUMINATED.
Narrative: DSNDING FROM FL230 A BUZZING VIBRATION COULD BE FELT THROUGH THE ACFT. FLT ATTENDANTS RPTED PRONOUNCED VIBRATION IN AFT CABIN. THE L ENG VIBRATION MONITOR PICKED UP THE VIBRATION. RETARDING THE L THROTTLE TO IDLE HAD NO EFFECT, HOWEVER, ADVANCING IT SLIGHTLY CAUSED THE VIBRATION TO CEASE. WITH APCH CTL, THE L OIL STRAINER CLOGGING LIGHT ILLUMINATED WITH NO OTHER ABNORMAL INDICATIONS. THROTTLE WAS RETARDED PER QRH, YET THE LIGHT REMAINED ILLUMINATED. AN EMER WAS DECLARED AND EQUIP REQUESTED AS A PRECAUTION. DUE TO PROX OF ARPT AND IN ORDER TO AVOID DEVELOPING FURTHER UNUSUAL CIRCUMSTANCES, THE DECISION WAS MADE TO LAND THE ACFT AND THEN SHUT THE ENG DOWN AT THE COMPLETION OF THE LNDG ROLL. MAINT FOUND THE OIL STRAINER COMPLETELY CLOGGED WITH METAL AND ON A SUBSEQUENT MAINT RUNUP FOR TROUBLESHOOTING, THE ENG VIBRATED SEVERELY AT 18% N2. THE START WAS ABORTED, THE ENG TO BE REMOVED.
