Narrative:
A short ferry flight from heg direct to vkx, climbed to 2500 ft prior to crossing davis army airfield, entered baltimore-washington class B airspace 1000 ft over floor at 1500 ft MSL. Inadvertently flew about 3 mi, then realized mistake, then rapidly descended at 1000 FPM to 1200 ft MSL, emerging near downwind/final leg at vkx runway 6 in front of another aircraft at that altitude traveling parallel to vkx runway 6 downwind (pattern altitude at vkx is 1000 ft MSL). Was able to see and avoid traffic without conflict or close encounter. Should've requested flight following or deviate into class B airspace or else descend below 1500 ft MSL over entire hef-vkx route.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: PVT PLT OF A PIPER PA28 INADVERTENTLY FLEW INTO CLASS B AIRSPACE DURING A SHORT XCOUNTRY TRIP AND DSNDED OUT OF IT JUST PRIOR TO ARRIVING AT DEST ARPT.
Narrative: A SHORT FERRY FLT FROM HEG DIRECT TO VKX, CLBED TO 2500 FT PRIOR TO XING DAVIS ARMY AIRFIELD, ENTERED BALTIMORE-WASHINGTON CLASS B AIRSPACE 1000 FT OVER FLOOR AT 1500 FT MSL. INADVERTENTLY FLEW ABOUT 3 MI, THEN REALIZED MISTAKE, THEN RAPIDLY DSNDED AT 1000 FPM TO 1200 FT MSL, EMERGING NEAR DOWNWIND/FINAL LEG AT VKX RWY 6 IN FRONT OF ANOTHER ACFT AT THAT ALT TRAVELING PARALLEL TO VKX RWY 6 DOWNWIND (PATTERN ALT AT VKX IS 1000 FT MSL). WAS ABLE TO SEE AND AVOID TFC WITHOUT CONFLICT OR CLOSE ENCOUNTER. SHOULD'VE REQUESTED FLT FOLLOWING OR DEVIATE INTO CLASS B AIRSPACE OR ELSE DSND BELOW 1500 FT MSL OVER ENTIRE HEF-VKX RTE.
