Narrative:

Just after takeoff on runway 27 in memphis at about 1500 ft AGL got a red master warning light and tail compartment high light. Declared an emergency with mem tower. Followed emergency checklist procedures and the light went out after about 1 1/2 mins. Made an overweight landing on runway 27 in mem at 100700 pounds. Sink rate at touchdown was about 300 FPM. Taxied back to gate xy, talked to mechanics, and made the appropriate logbook entries. Found that this particular aircraft had a history of this problem. Callback conversation with reporter revealed the following information: the reporter stated the DC9 and MD80 aircraft have a propensity for having false tail compartment overheat warnings on a hot day. The reporter said this incident occurred after takeoff and the warning remained on for a short period of time. The reporter said this aircraft had a maintenance history of false tail compartment warnings that were not addressed.

Title: A DC9-30 ON INITIAL CLB AT 1500 FT DECLARED AN EMER AND DIVERTED, DUE TO A FALSE TAIL COMPARTMENT OVERHEAT WARNING.

Narrative: JUST AFTER TKOF ON RWY 27 IN MEMPHIS AT ABOUT 1500 FT AGL GOT A RED MASTER WARNING LIGHT AND TAIL COMPARTMENT HIGH LIGHT. DECLARED AN EMER WITH MEM TWR. FOLLOWED EMER CHKLIST PROCS AND THE LIGHT WENT OUT AFTER ABOUT 1 1/2 MINS. MADE AN OVERWT LNDG ON RWY 27 IN MEM AT 100700 LBS. SINK RATE AT TOUCHDOWN WAS ABOUT 300 FPM. TAXIED BACK TO GATE XY, TALKED TO MECHS, AND MADE THE APPROPRIATE LOGBOOK ENTRIES. FOUND THAT THIS PARTICULAR ACFT HAD A HISTORY OF THIS PROB. CALLBACK CONVERSATION WITH RPTR REVEALED THE FOLLOWING INFO: THE RPTR STATED THE DC9 AND MD80 ACFT HAVE A PROPENSITY FOR HAVING FALSE TAIL COMPARTMENT OVERHEAT WARNINGS ON A HOT DAY.
