Narrative:
Position and hold on runway 4L ewr. Selected 108.7 ILS DME per departure procedures for takeoff on runway 4L and did not receive a DME. Asked tower how they would like us to identify the turn per the SID. He said that he would provide the turn in the air. Did not catch the NOTAM that the runway 4L DME was off the air. Switched to alternate ILS frequency, 110.75, for DME turn as a backup. No problems incurred.
