Narrative:
I back-taxied lelan lake to stir up the glassy water condition on the north 1/2 of the lake and attempted taking off straight down the lake without an arcing or a step turn. I got the plane into ground effect, but it wouldn't gain airspeed. I didn't think I could clear the trees with the amount of lake I had left and attempted to land from ground effect altitudes. The plane stalled and dove left from about 8 ft of altitude. The floats broke off, the propeller struck the floats and the plane sank in about 5 ft of water. There was minimal structural damage, but 1 float was heavily damaged. There were no injuries and the plane was removed from the lake in about 2 hours. 3 factors contributed to the incident: 1) I flew the plane only 1 1/2 hours since last yr and didn't do an arcing or step turn with marginal conditions of glassy water, high humidity and no wind on the north 1/2 of the lake. 2) the floats resisted leaving the water because of the glassy conditions on the north 1/2 of the lake and a slight crosswind burbling over trees on top of my plane. 3) the first 2 sits put me behind the power curve causing a stall.

Title: A TAYLOR CRAFT FLOAT PLANE IS DAMAGED WHEN A STUDENT PLT WAS ATTEMPTING A STRAIGHT-AWAY TKOF PROC ON A CALM LAKE AT 2L6, AK.
Narrative: I BACK-TAXIED LELAN LAKE TO STIR UP THE GLASSY WATER CONDITION ON THE N 1/2 OF THE LAKE AND ATTEMPTED TAKING OFF STRAIGHT DOWN THE LAKE WITHOUT AN ARCING OR A STEP TURN. I GOT THE PLANE INTO GND EFFECT, BUT IT WOULDN'T GAIN AIRSPD. I DIDN'T THINK I COULD CLR THE TREES WITH THE AMOUNT OF LAKE I HAD LEFT AND ATTEMPTED TO LAND FROM GND EFFECT ALTS. THE PLANE STALLED AND DOVE L FROM ABOUT 8 FT OF ALT. THE FLOATS BROKE OFF, THE PROP STRUCK THE FLOATS AND THE PLANE SANK IN ABOUT 5 FT OF WATER. THERE WAS MINIMAL STRUCTURAL DAMAGE, BUT 1 FLOAT WAS HEAVILY DAMAGED. THERE WERE NO INJURIES AND THE PLANE WAS REMOVED FROM THE LAKE IN ABOUT 2 HRS. 3 FACTORS CONTRIBUTED TO THE INCIDENT: 1) I FLEW THE PLANE ONLY 1 1/2 HRS SINCE LAST YR AND DIDN'T DO AN ARCING OR STEP TURN WITH MARGINAL CONDITIONS OF GLASSY WATER, HIGH HUMIDITY AND NO WIND ON THE N 1/2 OF THE LAKE. 2) THE FLOATS RESISTED LEAVING THE WATER BECAUSE OF THE GLASSY CONDITIONS ON THE N 1/2 OF THE LAKE AND A SLIGHT XWIND BURBLING OVER TREES ON TOP OF MY PLANE. 3) THE FIRST 2 SITS PUT ME BEHIND THE PWR CURVE CAUSING A STALL.
