Narrative:

Phx approach control advised us that we had traffic at our 12 O'clock position that was descending VFR to within 500 ft of our altitude. We acknowledged and advised that we were looking for the traffic. We observed the reported traffic on our TCASII display at our 12 O'clock position and about 5 mi ahead. First we received an aural TCASII TA, followed shortly thereafter with a TCASII RA instructing us to descend. We disconnected the autoplt and initiated a descent to comply with the TCASII RA since we did not have visual contact with our reported traffic. We immediately informed ATC of our actions and were given a clearance to turn off the STAR to a westerly heading and to descend to 6000 ft MSL. This action cleared the TCASII RA almost immediately. We had visual contact with the other aircraft shortly thereafter as it passed off our left side within approximately 2 mi of our aircraft.

Title: AN INBOUND A320 FLC RECEIVES A TCASII RA FOR DSCNT ON AN OPPOSITE DIRECTION DSNDING VFR CPR ACFT THAT WAS NORAC TFC 30 MI NE OF PXR, AZ.

Narrative: PHX APCH CTL ADVISED US THAT WE HAD TFC AT OUR 12 O'CLOCK POS THAT WAS DSNDING VFR TO WITHIN 500 FT OF OUR ALT. WE ACKNOWLEDGED AND ADVISED THAT WE WERE LOOKING FOR THE TFC. WE OBSERVED THE RPTED TFC ON OUR TCASII DISPLAY AT OUR 12 O'CLOCK POS AND ABOUT 5 MI AHEAD. FIRST WE RECEIVED AN AURAL TCASII TA, FOLLOWED SHORTLY THEREAFTER WITH A TCASII RA INSTRUCTING US TO DSND. WE DISCONNECTED THE AUTOPLT AND INITIATED A DSCNT TO COMPLY WITH THE TCASII RA SINCE WE DID NOT HAVE VISUAL CONTACT WITH OUR RPTED TFC. WE IMMEDIATELY INFORMED ATC OF OUR ACTIONS AND WERE GIVEN A CLRNC TO TURN OFF THE STAR TO A WESTERLY HDG AND TO DSND TO 6000 FT MSL. THIS ACTION CLRED THE TCASII RA ALMOST IMMEDIATELY. WE HAD VISUAL CONTACT WITH THE OTHER ACFT SHORTLY THEREAFTER AS IT PASSED OFF OUR L SIDE WITHIN APPROX 2 MI OF OUR ACFT.
