Narrative:
Location: howdy intersection on cqy 4 arrival. On cqy 4 arrival we were told to maintain 320 KIAS or greater. Assigned 11000 ft by tacke which was going to be tight to make. At the frequency change we were told to 'comply with speeds on the STAR, contact approach.' we were just about at howdy which has a 280 KIAS restr. While checking in with approach and passing 12000 ft, the controller asked us to level off at 12000 ft, which we did. He asked if we were complying with the speeds on the STAR and I replied yes. At this point, we noticed that we were only 3 mi behind the aircraft in front of us instead of the usual 5 mi. After rechking the STAR, we realized we had missed the speed restr at howdy. We allowed ourselves to get fixated on making the 11000 ft restr at tacke. As the PNF, I need to pay closer attention to monitoring the STAR and ensuring that all restrs will be met. Supplemental information from acn 482220: traffic was 3 mi ahead at 11000 ft. At this time our speed was back at 250 KTS, slowed further to 210 KTS and cleared to 11000 ft.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: A DSNDING S80 FLC FAILS TO MAKE THE SPD RESTR OF 280 KTS XING HOWDY INTXN ON THE CEDAR CREEK STAR INTO DFW, TX.
Narrative: LOCATION: HOWDY INTXN ON CQY 4 ARR. ON CQY 4 ARR WE WERE TOLD TO MAINTAIN 320 KIAS OR GREATER. ASSIGNED 11000 FT BY TACKE WHICH WAS GOING TO BE TIGHT TO MAKE. AT THE FREQ CHANGE WE WERE TOLD TO 'COMPLY WITH SPDS ON THE STAR, CONTACT APCH.' WE WERE JUST ABOUT AT HOWDY WHICH HAS A 280 KIAS RESTR. WHILE CHKING IN WITH APCH AND PASSING 12000 FT, THE CTLR ASKED US TO LEVEL OFF AT 12000 FT, WHICH WE DID. HE ASKED IF WE WERE COMPLYING WITH THE SPDS ON THE STAR AND I REPLIED YES. AT THIS POINT, WE NOTICED THAT WE WERE ONLY 3 MI BEHIND THE ACFT IN FRONT OF US INSTEAD OF THE USUAL 5 MI. AFTER RECHKING THE STAR, WE REALIZED WE HAD MISSED THE SPD RESTR AT HOWDY. WE ALLOWED OURSELVES TO GET FIXATED ON MAKING THE 11000 FT RESTR AT TACKE. AS THE PNF, I NEED TO PAY CLOSER ATTN TO MONITORING THE STAR AND ENSURING THAT ALL RESTRS WILL BE MET. SUPPLEMENTAL INFO FROM ACN 482220: TFC WAS 3 MI AHEAD AT 11000 FT. AT THIS TIME OUR SPD WAS BACK AT 250 KTS, SLOWED FURTHER TO 210 KTS AND CLRED TO 11000 FT.
