Narrative:
Departed sarasota, fl (srq), to stuart, fl (sua), VFR. Was issued clearance to remain clear of class B or class C airspace within 10 mi. I thought the clearance was to avoid tampa class B airspace adjacent (contiguous) to srq class C. Clearance may have been to avoid srq class C airspace. Climbing through 1800 ft, srq tower notified me that I had to remain at or below 1600 ft if contacting tpa approach, or less than or equal to 1200 ft if VFR. I immediately descended to 1600 ft and was handed off to tpa approach control. I do not remember being given a specific altitude restr in the initial clearance. I am used to flying on IFR flight plans under positive control and am not familiar with VFR operations to class B and class C airports. I knew I was clear of the tpa class B airspace, but failed to stay underneath the srq class C floor. I believe I was also somewhat distraction by checking new navigation and DME receivers which had just been installed in aircraft.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: AN APPARENT ACR CAPT, FLYING A PA23-250 OUT OF SRQ, MAY HAVE BLUNDERED INTO TPA CLASS B AIRSPACE.
Narrative: DEPARTED SARASOTA, FL (SRQ), TO STUART, FL (SUA), VFR. WAS ISSUED CLRNC TO REMAIN CLR OF CLASS B OR CLASS C AIRSPACE WITHIN 10 MI. I THOUGHT THE CLRNC WAS TO AVOID TAMPA CLASS B AIRSPACE ADJACENT (CONTIGUOUS) TO SRQ CLASS C. CLRNC MAY HAVE BEEN TO AVOID SRQ CLASS C AIRSPACE. CLBING THROUGH 1800 FT, SRQ TWR NOTIFIED ME THAT I HAD TO REMAIN AT OR BELOW 1600 FT IF CONTACTING TPA APCH, OR LESS THAN OR EQUAL TO 1200 FT IF VFR. I IMMEDIATELY DSNDED TO 1600 FT AND WAS HANDED OFF TO TPA APCH CTL. I DO NOT REMEMBER BEING GIVEN A SPECIFIC ALT RESTR IN THE INITIAL CLRNC. I AM USED TO FLYING ON IFR FLT PLANS UNDER POSITIVE CTL AND AM NOT FAMILIAR WITH VFR OPS TO CLASS B AND CLASS C ARPTS. I KNEW I WAS CLR OF THE TPA CLASS B AIRSPACE, BUT FAILED TO STAY UNDERNEATH THE SRQ CLASS C FLOOR. I BELIEVE I WAS ALSO SOMEWHAT DISTR BY CHKING NEW NAV AND DME RECEIVERS WHICH HAD JUST BEEN INSTALLED IN ACFT.
