Narrative:

On a beautiful windless cavu day, I flew a very familiar route -- that I usually must fly IFR -- at IFR altitude of 9000 ft for much of the distance while flying VFR. I noticed the error (more properly 'awakened') when checking altimeter pressure setting with nearby ATIS. No explanation for lapse, just force of habit.
