Narrative:

ATC facility: ZID. Location: 60 mi west of abb. On the mosey 5 arrival at FL290. Approximately 70 mi west of abb, I (PF) thought we were cleared to cross 40 DME out of abb at FL240 and planned to start down at 60 DME out, 6 mi from jrico intersection. Actual clearance was for 60 DME from abb arrival FL240. I totally misinterpreted the clearance, and did not ask for confirmation. No excuse for this not confirming or getting relief, but it might be better to try to clear aircraft to an altitude at a specific point on the published arrival or route. The controller told us no separation problem occurred and not to worry about it. No aircraft were in our area during this time period.

Title: AN FK100 CREW MISINTERPRETS THEIR ALT XING RESTR AND FAIL TO MAKE A DSCNT IN TIME 60 MI W OF ABB, IN.

Narrative: ATC FACILITY: ZID. LOCATION: 60 MI W OF ABB. ON THE MOSEY 5 ARR AT FL290. APPROX 70 MI W OF ABB, I (PF) THOUGHT WE WERE CLRED TO CROSS 40 DME OUT OF ABB AT FL240 AND PLANNED TO START DOWN AT 60 DME OUT, 6 MI FROM JRICO INTXN. ACTUAL CLRNC WAS FOR 60 DME FROM ABB ARR FL240. I TOTALLY MISINTERPRETED THE CLRNC, AND DID NOT ASK FOR CONFIRMATION. NO EXCUSE FOR THIS NOT CONFIRMING OR GETTING RELIEF, BUT IT MIGHT BE BETTER TO TRY TO CLR ACFT TO AN ALT AT A SPECIFIC POINT ON THE PUBLISHED ARR OR RTE. THE CTLR TOLD US NO SEPARATION PROB OCCURRED AND NOT TO WORRY ABOUT IT. NO ACFT WERE IN OUR AREA DURING THIS TIME PERIOD.
