Narrative:
During climb to FL230, we experienced a loud bang and airframe vibration. I observed the #2 engine egt at 640 degrees C. I reduced the #2 throttle to idle and egt decreased to 580 degrees C and the vibration continued. We called for and completed the QRH checklist for engine fire/severe damage/separation. We declared an emergency with ATC, made a PA to passenger, and contacted first flight attendant. We called for and completed reference action checklist. I then had the first flight attendant prepare for a cabin advisory and briefed her accordingly. We then sent a message to dispatch and they replied with a declaration of an amber alert. We then briefed approach and landing, go around procedure single engine, and requested emergency equipment to be standing by. We landed, cleared runway, had emergency equipment check brakes and then taxied to the gate.

Narrative: DURING CLB TO FL230, WE EXPERIENCED A LOUD BANG AND AIRFRAME VIBRATION. I OBSERVED THE #2 ENG EGT AT 640 DEGS C. I REDUCED THE #2 THROTTLE TO IDLE AND EGT DECREASED TO 580 DEGS C AND THE VIBRATION CONTINUED. WE CALLED FOR AND COMPLETED THE QRH CHKLIST FOR ENG FIRE/SEVERE DAMAGE/SEPARATION. WE DECLARED AN EMER WITH ATC, MADE A PA TO PAX, AND CONTACTED FIRST FLT ATTENDANT. WE CALLED FOR AND COMPLETED REF ACTION CHKLIST. I THEN HAD THE FIRST FLT ATTENDANT PREPARE FOR A CABIN ADVISORY AND BRIEFED HER ACCORDINGLY. WE THEN SENT A MESSAGE TO DISPATCH AND THEY REPLIED WITH A DECLARATION OF AN AMBER ALERT.
