Narrative:
Flying over grand canyon at FL350. Made a PA to passenger about the view from both sides of the aircraft. Started a small turn to the right to give them better view then started a turn back to left. ZAB queried our heading and we told them we were turning left back to course. He said he showed us 5 mi right of course. Our CDI (VOR) did show 2 1/2 mi, but correcting. He told us to call his supervisor when we landed. The supervisor told us in the future to let them know, because there was an increasing amount of traffic in that sector. Should have looked at CDI better and informed controller before turning. Supplemental information from acn 484202: noticing that we were still within the airway boundaries and correcting easily back to centerline, we explained the reason for the slight heading change.

Title: A B727-200 FLC ALMOST DEPARTS THE CONFINES OF J11 AIRWAY WHILE GIVING THE PAX A LITTLE SIGHTSEEING TOUR OVER THE GRAND CANYON 80 MI FROM BCE, UT.
Narrative: FLYING OVER GRAND CANYON AT FL350. MADE A PA TO PAX ABOUT THE VIEW FROM BOTH SIDES OF THE ACFT. STARTED A SMALL TURN TO THE R TO GIVE THEM BETTER VIEW THEN STARTED A TURN BACK TO L. ZAB QUERIED OUR HDG AND WE TOLD THEM WE WERE TURNING L BACK TO COURSE. HE SAID HE SHOWED US 5 MI R OF COURSE. OUR CDI (VOR) DID SHOW 2 1/2 MI, BUT CORRECTING. HE TOLD US TO CALL HIS SUPVR WHEN WE LANDED. THE SUPVR TOLD US IN THE FUTURE TO LET THEM KNOW, BECAUSE THERE WAS AN INCREASING AMOUNT OF TFC IN THAT SECTOR. SHOULD HAVE LOOKED AT CDI BETTER AND INFORMED CTLR BEFORE TURNING. SUPPLEMENTAL INFO FROM ACN 484202: NOTICING THAT WE WERE STILL WITHIN THE AIRWAY BOUNDARIES AND CORRECTING EASILY BACK TO CTRLINE, WE EXPLAINED THE REASON FOR THE SLIGHT HDG CHANGE.
