Our flight was on vectors to final and were vectored into the path of an aircraft on downwind for runway 8L in atlanta. Estimate the 2 aircraft came within 1/2 mi horizontal and 600 ft vertical of each other during our turn to avoid the other aircraft.

Title: FLC OF AN MD88 TOOK EVASIVE ACTION DURING VECTOR TO FINAL TO AVOID ANOTHER MD88 ON A DOWNWIND LEG.
Narrative: OUR FLT WAS ON VECTORS TO FINAL AND WERE VECTORED INTO THE PATH OF AN ACFT ON DOWNWIND FOR RWY 8L IN ATLANTA. ESTIMATE THE 2 ACFT CAME WITHIN 1/2 MI HORIZ AND 600 FT VERT OF EACH OTHER DURING OUR TURN TO AVOID THE OTHER ACFT.
