Narrative:
On sep/xa/00 at approximately XA50, I parked my PA28-161 at montgomery airport in san diego, ca, to refuel. After refueling, I started the engine, following the proper procedures stated in poh for taxiing. Shortly after the engine started, the engine stalled by itself, and I took an appropriate action (cut mixture, closed throttle, turned fuel pump off, disengaged starter) to find out what was happening in the airplane. As soon as a person standing behind the airplane notified me that smoke and flames were coming from the exhaust pipe in front of the engine, I got out of the airplane to visibly determine the situation. The smoke, which was coming out of the engine cowling (possibly invisible flames in the cowling) was observed. I requested the refueler personnel to use a fire extinguisher. After we finished extinguishing the smoke from the engine the ground personnel towed the airplane to its parking place.

Title: A PA28-161 PLT ABANDONED HIS ACFT WHEN SMOKE IS DETECTED COMING FROM NEAR THE EXHAUST MANIFOLD ON THE GND AT MYF, CA.
Narrative: ON SEP/XA/00 AT APPROX XA50, I PARKED MY PA28-161 AT MONTGOMERY ARPT IN SAN DIEGO, CA, TO REFUEL. AFTER REFUELING, I STARTED THE ENG, FOLLOWING THE PROPER PROCS STATED IN POH FOR TAXIING. SHORTLY AFTER THE ENG STARTED, THE ENG STALLED BY ITSELF, AND I TOOK AN APPROPRIATE ACTION (CUT MIXTURE, CLOSED THROTTLE, TURNED FUEL PUMP OFF, DISENGAGED STARTER) TO FIND OUT WHAT WAS HAPPENING IN THE AIRPLANE. AS SOON AS A PERSON STANDING BEHIND THE AIRPLANE NOTIFIED ME THAT SMOKE AND FLAMES WERE COMING FROM THE EXHAUST PIPE IN FRONT OF THE ENG, I GOT OUT OF THE AIRPLANE TO VISIBLY DETERMINE THE SIT. THE SMOKE, WHICH WAS COMING OUT OF THE ENG COWLING (POSSIBLY INVISIBLE FLAMES IN THE COWLING) WAS OBSERVED. I REQUESTED THE REFUELER PERSONNEL TO USE A FIRE EXTINGUISHER. AFTER WE FINISHED EXTINGUISHING THE SMOKE FROM THE ENG THE GND PERSONNEL TOWED THE AIRPLANE TO ITS PARKING PLACE.
