Narrative:
Pushback and engine start was normal. Received clearance to taxi to runway 6 via taxiway a. We were advised by ground of men and equipment on taxiway a. As we approached the area of concern, there was a single truck parked at the edge of the taxiway. We steered as far left of centerline as safely possible. The first officer kept vigilant watch on his side of the aircraft. There were men in the vicinity of the truck and they gave no indication of reduced separation between truck and the aircraft. I judged the distance to be safe and proceeded at a slower than normal taxi speed. A bump was heard as the right wing passed the truck. Damage was sustained to the right wingtip due to a collision between the wingtip and the truck. We taxied back to the gate and canceled the flight. Supplemental information from acn 486902: as we approached the men and equipment the aircraft was taxied left of centerline. I felt the aircraft was as far left as safely possible. Taxi speed was at a normal to slow rate. I was looking back as far back as possible and felt there was sufficient clearance. There were men standing between the equipment and the taxiway and they gave no indication of reduced separation between the aircraft and equipment. The right wing came into contact with a truck. We stopped the aircraft and told ground that we needed to return to the gate.

Title: MD88 CREW HIT A TRUCK PARKED ON A TXWY AT BHM.
Narrative: PUSHBACK AND ENG START WAS NORMAL. RECEIVED CLRNC TO TAXI TO RWY 6 VIA TXWY A. WE WERE ADVISED BY GND OF MEN AND EQUIP ON TXWY A. AS WE APCHED THE AREA OF CONCERN, THERE WAS A SINGLE TRUCK PARKED AT THE EDGE OF THE TXWY. WE STEERED AS FAR L OF CTRLINE AS SAFELY POSSIBLE. THE FO KEPT VIGILANT WATCH ON HIS SIDE OF THE ACFT. THERE WERE MEN IN THE VICINITY OF THE TRUCK AND THEY GAVE NO INDICATION OF REDUCED SEPARATION BTWN TRUCK AND THE ACFT. I JUDGED THE DISTANCE TO BE SAFE AND PROCEEDED AT A SLOWER THAN NORMAL TAXI SPD. A BUMP WAS HEARD AS THE R WING PASSED THE TRUCK. DAMAGE WAS SUSTAINED TO THE R WINGTIP DUE TO A COLLISION BTWN THE WINGTIP AND THE TRUCK. WE TAXIED BACK TO THE GATE AND CANCELED THE FLT. SUPPLEMENTAL INFO FROM ACN 486902: AS WE APCHED THE MEN AND EQUIP THE ACFT WAS TAXIED L OF CTRLINE. I FELT THE ACFT WAS AS FAR L AS SAFELY POSSIBLE. TAXI SPD WAS AT A NORMAL TO SLOW RATE. I WAS LOOKING BACK AS FAR BACK AS POSSIBLE AND FELT THERE WAS SUFFICIENT CLRNC. THERE WERE MEN STANDING BTWN THE EQUIP AND THE TXWY AND THEY GAVE NO INDICATION OF REDUCED SEPARATION BTWN THE ACFT AND EQUIP. THE R WING CAME INTO CONTACT WITH A TRUCK. WE STOPPED THE ACFT AND TOLD GND THAT WE NEEDED TO RETURN TO THE GATE.
