Narrative:
Tower cleared and we read back 'air carrier X efgg taxi into position and hold.' following this, some other transmission occurred, the substance of which I do not recall. The tower then said, 'air carrier X efgg, hold short of the runway.' I then told my first officer to tell the tower that we were past the hold short line. Upon doing so, the tower told another company flight on about a 1 mi final, to go around. I think the confusion was generated because at the same time there was an air carrier X, ecgg at runway 27 holding short. We were holding short of runway 18R. The tower was controling both runways on the same frequency with high traffic volume. I'm not certain at this point who made the mistake, but this seemed inevitable with similar sounding call signs and piling up the workload on the controller.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: A CL65 PIC RPT ON CREATING A RWY INCURSION WHEN 2 SIMILAR SOUNDING, SAME COMPANY ACFT WERE ON FREQ AWAITING POS AND HOLD CLRNC AT CVG.
Narrative: TWR CLRED AND WE READ BACK 'ACR X EFGG TAXI INTO POS AND HOLD.' FOLLOWING THIS, SOME OTHER XMISSION OCCURRED, THE SUBSTANCE OF WHICH I DO NOT RECALL. THE TWR THEN SAID, 'ACR X EFGG, HOLD SHORT OF THE RWY.' I THEN TOLD MY FO TO TELL THE TWR THAT WE WERE PAST THE HOLD SHORT LINE. UPON DOING SO, THE TWR TOLD ANOTHER COMPANY FLT ON ABOUT A 1 MI FINAL, TO GO AROUND. I THINK THE CONFUSION WAS GENERATED BECAUSE AT THE SAME TIME THERE WAS AN ACR X, ECGG AT RWY 27 HOLDING SHORT. WE WERE HOLDING SHORT OF RWY 18R. THE TWR WAS CTLING BOTH RWYS ON THE SAME FREQ WITH HIGH TFC VOLUME. I'M NOT CERTAIN AT THIS POINT WHO MADE THE MISTAKE, BUT THIS SEEMED INEVITABLE WITH SIMILAR SOUNDING CALL SIGNS AND PILING UP THE WORKLOAD ON THE CTLR.
