Narrative:
We were at 10000 ft MSL on STAR into sna, requested descent and were given traffic at 1 O'clock position, 9 mi. I stated 'in sight.' approach control asked if we could maintain visual separation. We said 'yes,' and were given descent to 7000 ft. The other carrier asked about our separation during our descent. Approach control stated we were maintaining visual, then issued climb to 14000 ft for them (from 9000 ft). They appeared clear to us and I resumed my scan inside on instruments and forward. With the other aircraft behind our wing line, out of our sight, their radio call of 'descending on RA' (from TCASII) signaled a maneuver on their part. In the future, I will remain on IFR separation during dusk or night operations to give added assurance of separation to all parties. Supplemental information from acn 488116: in descent to 7000 ft received RA, increased rate of descent, traffic in sight at all times.

Title: A DSNDING B757-200 FLC FAILS TO MAINTAIN VISUAL SEPARATION FROM A CLBING ACR FLT 15 MI E OF KAYOH INTXN ON FREQ WITH SCT, CA
Narrative: WE WERE AT 10000 FT MSL ON STAR INTO SNA, REQUESTED DSCNT AND WERE GIVEN TFC AT 1 O'CLOCK POS, 9 MI. I STATED 'IN SIGHT.' APCH CTL ASKED IF WE COULD MAINTAIN VISUAL SEPARATION. WE SAID 'YES,' AND WERE GIVEN DSCNT TO 7000 FT. THE OTHER CARRIER ASKED ABOUT OUR SEPARATION DURING OUR DSCNT. APCH CTL STATED WE WERE MAINTAINING VISUAL, THEN ISSUED CLB TO 14000 FT FOR THEM (FROM 9000 FT). THEY APPEARED CLR TO US AND I RESUMED MY SCAN INSIDE ON INSTS AND FORWARD. WITH THE OTHER ACFT BEHIND OUR WING LINE, OUT OF OUR SIGHT, THEIR RADIO CALL OF 'DSNDING ON RA' (FROM TCASII) SIGNALED A MANEUVER ON THEIR PART. IN THE FUTURE, I WILL REMAIN ON IFR SEPARATION DURING DUSK OR NIGHT OPS TO GIVE ADDED ASSURANCE OF SEPARATION TO ALL PARTIES. SUPPLEMENTAL INFO FROM ACN 488116: IN DSCNT TO 7000 FT RECEIVED RA, INCREASED RATE OF DSCNT, TFC IN SIGHT AT ALL TIMES.
