Narrative:
Center fuel tank written up in maintenance log as having error codes. While repairing the center tank gauge, maintenance said the right main tank also had error codes and would have to be placarded along with the center fuel tank and operated per MEL. I told the mechanic that we could not operate with both tanks placarded. No write-up was made in maintenance log about the right main tank -- only the center tank. The mechanic then said he would remove center tank placard and leave placard on the right main tank, upon arrival in mcallen, tx, I received a call from dispatch informing me the aircraft was illegal due to 2 placards on the fuel tanks. Apparently the mechanic had entered both write-ups into the computer by mistake.

Title: A B737-300 WAS DISPATCHED IN NON COMPLIANCE WITH THE CTR AND R FUEL QUANTITY INDICATORS INOP IN CONFLICT WITH THE MEL.

THE MECH THEN SAID HE WOULD REMOVE CTR TANK PLACARD AND LEAVE PLACARD ON THE R MAIN TANK, UPON ARR IN MCALLEN, TX, I RECEIVED A CALL FROM DISPATCH INFORMING ME THE ACFT WAS ILLEGAL DUE TO 2 PLACARDS ON THE FUEL TANKS. APPARENTLY THE MECH HAD ENTERED BOTH WRITE-UPS INTO THE COMPUTER BY MISTAKE.
