Narrative:
The flight was from lga, ny, to toi, al. We had our clearance to fly to biggy intersection and then J75 to gve direct mgm direct toi. My copilot picked waypoints along J75 after biggy intersection and programmed them into the FMS. The next intxns after biggy were copes then modena (mxe) VOR. Since the VOR for dupont (dqo) was close to mxe VOR box, he mistakenly put 'dqo' into the FMS. After copes intersection, we started flying to dqo VOR. A few mins later, we were informed by controller that we were off J75 and on the wrong heading. We then checked our routing and with a new heading from the controller we reintercepted J75 and continued our flight. I'd like to emphasize on paying closer attention to the east coast airspace and congested airways and the close gaps between the airways.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: A BE400 BEECH JET FLC DEVIATE FROM THE AIRWAY WHEN THE FO PROGRAMS THE FMS INCORRECTLY ON FREQ WITH ZDC, DC.
Narrative: THE FLT WAS FROM LGA, NY, TO TOI, AL. WE HAD OUR CLRNC TO FLY TO BIGGY INTXN AND THEN J75 TO GVE DIRECT MGM DIRECT TOI. MY COPLT PICKED WAYPOINTS ALONG J75 AFTER BIGGY INTXN AND PROGRAMMED THEM INTO THE FMS. THE NEXT INTXNS AFTER BIGGY WERE COPES THEN MODENA (MXE) VOR. SINCE THE VOR FOR DUPONT (DQO) WAS CLOSE TO MXE VOR BOX, HE MISTAKENLY PUT 'DQO' INTO THE FMS. AFTER COPES INTXN, WE STARTED FLYING TO DQO VOR. A FEW MINS LATER, WE WERE INFORMED BY CTLR THAT WE WERE OFF J75 AND ON THE WRONG HDG. WE THEN CHKED OUR ROUTING AND WITH A NEW HDG FROM THE CTLR WE REINTERCEPTED J75 AND CONTINUED OUR FLT. I'D LIKE TO EMPHASIZE ON PAYING CLOSER ATTN TO THE EAST COAST AIRSPACE AND CONGESTED AIRWAYS AND THE CLOSE GAPS BTWN THE AIRWAYS.
