Narrative:
My first officer was flying and we were given crossing restr. 5 mi south pye VOR on pye arrival at 7000 ft. ATC called us to verify altitude as we were descending through 8400 ft 9 mi south. Oops. He said (ATC) to expedite to 7000 ft. We were apologetic. No phone calls made. I had been busy doing descent flow duties. I should have been monitoring pilot. Not tuning everything out to get my non-flying duties done. I am relatively new to the captain's seat. I have 250 hours as captain. Been a captain for a little over 3 months. I should be able to rely on my first officer, but everyone makes mistakes and that is why there are 2 pilots up front.
