Narrative:
Aircraft had #1 generator deferred. The deferral was listed as a CAT B item 72 hours. This is correct if just the generator is deferred. Upon further investigation determined that the constant speed drive was disconnected. The constant speed drive is under the same deferral MEL number however it is a CAT a item (20 flight hours). The maintenance controller made improper deferral. This is a very common problem at our airline. Unfortunately we did not determine this until after takeoff. Arriving back in cvg maintenance corrected.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: A CANADAIR CL65 WAS DISPATCHED IN NON COMPLIANCE WITH #1 GENERATOR DEFERRED AS INOP PER THE MEL, BUT TIME LIMITS FOR CORRECTIVE ACTION WAS INCORRECTLY ENTERED.
Narrative: ACFT HAD #1 GENERATOR DEFERRED. THE DEFERRAL WAS LISTED AS A CAT B ITEM 72 HRS. THIS IS CORRECT IF JUST THE GENERATOR IS DEFERRED. UPON FURTHER INVESTIGATION DETERMINED THAT THE CONSTANT SPD DRIVE WAS DISCONNECTED. THE CONSTANT SPD DRIVE IS UNDER THE SAME DEFERRAL MEL NUMBER HOWEVER IT IS A CAT A ITEM (20 FLT HRS). THE MAINT CTLR MADE IMPROPER DEFERRAL. THIS IS A VERY COMMON PROB AT OUR AIRLINE. UNFORTUNATELY WE DID NOT DETERMINE THIS UNTIL AFTER TKOF. ARRIVING BACK IN CVG MAINT CORRECTED.
