Narrative:
Our flight was being vectored to msp runway 12R. At approximately 6 DME approach asked if we had the field in sight. We told them we had the field in sight. Approach then cleared us for the visual approach to runway 12R and to switch tower. We continued toward the field and switched tower. At approximately 5 DME we saw the runways. We had to turn right to line up for runway 12R. When we contacted tower they told us we were cleared for the visual approach to runway 12R and we had lined up on runway 12L. The captain replied that when we saw the runways we turned to line up on runway 12R. The captain also informed the tower we were not receiving the runway 12R localizer. We eventually received the runway 12R localizer at approximately 1 DME. In the future I will not accept a visual approach until I can see both the field and the runway environments. In this instance ATC thought we had mistakenly lined up on the wrong runway when in actuality we were simply heading toward the field to visually acquire runway 12R.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: VISUAL APCH ASSIGNED BY APCH CTL CAUSES CONCERN TO TWR CTLR WHEN THE ACFT CROSSES THE APCH AREA OF A PARALLEL RWY AT MSP, MI.
Narrative: OUR FLT WAS BEING VECTORED TO MSP RWY 12R. AT APPROX 6 DME APCH ASKED IF WE HAD THE FIELD IN SIGHT. WE TOLD THEM WE HAD THE FIELD IN SIGHT. APCH THEN CLRED US FOR THE VISUAL APCH TO RWY 12R AND TO SWITCH TWR. WE CONTINUED TOWARD THE FIELD AND SWITCHED TWR. AT APPROX 5 DME WE SAW THE RWYS. WE HAD TO TURN R TO LINE UP FOR RWY 12R. WHEN WE CONTACTED TWR THEY TOLD US WE WERE CLRED FOR THE VISUAL APCH TO RWY 12R AND WE HAD LINED UP ON RWY 12L. THE CAPT REPLIED THAT WHEN WE SAW THE RWYS WE TURNED TO LINE UP ON RWY 12R. THE CAPT ALSO INFORMED THE TWR WE WERE NOT RECEIVING THE RWY 12R LOC. WE EVENTUALLY RECEIVED THE RWY 12R LOC AT APPROX 1 DME. IN THE FUTURE I WILL NOT ACCEPT A VISUAL APCH UNTIL I CAN SEE BOTH THE FIELD AND THE RWY ENVIRONMENTS. IN THIS INSTANCE ATC THOUGHT WE HAD MISTAKENLY LINED UP ON THE WRONG RWY WHEN IN ACTUALITY WE WERE SIMPLY HEADING TOWARD THE FIELD TO VISUALLY ACQUIRE RWY 12R.
