Narrative:
New airport under construction less than 2 mi north of active airport with similar runway alignment. Arrival from south to make visual approach. Called airport in sight at 8-10 NM. Cleared for visual. Switched to tower, cleared to land. Checked VNAV -- all appeared. Due to extreme proximity of both runways as VNAV gave turn indication(south) to join runway, both pilots went totally visual, looking for aircraft, birds, etc. At 2 mi from runway, tower advised left 360 degree turn, then right 360 degrees. Commencing right 360 degree turn, both pilots saw active runway to south and landed. No NOTAMS advising of dual/similar runway.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: FLC OF A GULF STREAM V WAS MAKING APCH TO A NEW ARPT UNDER CONSTRUCTION UNTIL THE TWR CTLR INTERVENED AND VECTORED THEM TO THE CORRECT ARPT.
Narrative: NEW ARPT UNDER CONSTRUCTION LESS THAN 2 MI N OF ACTIVE ARPT WITH SIMILAR RWY ALIGNMENT. ARR FROM S TO MAKE VISUAL APCH. CALLED ARPT IN SIGHT AT 8-10 NM. CLRED FOR VISUAL. SWITCHED TO TWR, CLRED TO LAND. CHKED VNAV -- ALL APPEARED. DUE TO EXTREME PROX OF BOTH RWYS AS VNAV GAVE TURN INDICATION(S) TO JOIN RWY, BOTH PLTS WENT TOTALLY VISUAL, LOOKING FOR ACFT, BIRDS, ETC. AT 2 MI FROM RWY, TWR ADVISED L 360 DEG TURN, THEN R 360 DEGS. COMMENCING R 360 DEG TURN, BOTH PLTS SAW ACTIVE RWY TO S AND LANDED. NO NOTAMS ADVISING OF DUAL/SIMILAR RWY.
