Narrative:
IFR flight from dan to gsp and had just reached cruise altitude of 6000 ft MSL 20 NM north of gso. Engine abruptly and without warning lost all power. I notified control of my problem and they gave me vectors to the nearest airport shiloh. While gliding toward the airport, I switched tanks and turned on boost pump with no result. At about 1000 ft AGL, I determined that I could not reach the airport and turned toward a field that I had picked up. I landed in the field gear up, and slid down the field approximately 200 yards and went through a fence at the end of the field. No injuries and aircraft damaged consistent with gear up landing. FAA visited site and confirmed approximately 30 gallons fuel remained in each tank. As of this writing, cause of engine failure not known.

Title: SINGLE PLT HAD AN ENG FAILURE AND MADE AN EMER LNDG IN A FIELD.
Narrative: IFR FLT FROM DAN TO GSP AND HAD JUST REACHED CRUISE ALT OF 6000 FT MSL 20 NM N OF GSO. ENG ABRUPTLY AND WITHOUT WARNING LOST ALL PWR. I NOTIFIED CTL OF MY PROB AND THEY GAVE ME VECTORS TO THE NEAREST ARPT SHILOH. WHILE GLIDING TOWARD THE ARPT, I SWITCHED TANKS AND TURNED ON BOOST PUMP WITH NO RESULT. AT ABOUT 1000 FT AGL, I DETERMINED THAT I COULD NOT REACH THE ARPT AND TURNED TOWARD A FIELD THAT I HAD PICKED UP. I LANDED IN THE FIELD GEAR UP, AND SLID DOWN THE FIELD APPROX 200 YARDS AND WENT THROUGH A FENCE AT THE END OF THE FIELD. NO INJURIES AND ACFT DAMAGED CONSISTENT WITH GEAR UP LNDG. FAA VISITED SITE AND CONFIRMED APPROX 30 GALLONS FUEL REMAINED IN EACH TANK. AS OF THIS WRITING, CAUSE OF ENG FAILURE NOT KNOWN.
