Narrative:

We were in VMC conditions at about 12000 ft. I do not know the ATC frequency, it was ZBW. The time approximately XA00 local on the east coast over orw. The left oil filter bypass EICAS mesg. Appeared. I was the PNF and I took the checklist. We ran the checklist. Bringing the thrust lever back to idle, did not extinguish the mesg, therefore, the checklist required us to an in-flight shutdown. I then ran the checklist. After the checklist was completed we declared an emergency with ZBW and we were given priority handling to the field. We called the purser up and gave a cabin advisory only. When we did our flaps 20 degree landing at the field we taxied to the gate without incident.
