Narrative:
Several mins after takeoff the left hydraulic quantity EICAS message followed by left hydraulic reservoir and left hydraulic pressure appeared. Declared an emergency. Completed appropriate checklists. Contacted dispatch, sam F's. Landed normally at lax, flaps 20 degrees over landing weight at 202,000 pounds because I deemed it as safe to land overweight as to burn off fuel. First officer called duty flight manager at XA50 PST and ok to fly next legs. Supplemental information from acn 491976: several mins after takeoff from runway 25R at lax, left hydraulic quantity EICAS message appeared followed by the left hydraulic reservoir and left hydraulic system pressure EICAS messages. Declared an emergency with lax while completing appropriate checklists. Contacted dispatch, maintenance and informed flight attendants. Returned to lax to land on runway 25R. After discussion with maintenance, crew deemed it safe to land overweight at a gross weight of 202000 pounds. After uneventful landing, came to a complete stop on the runway. Had rescue cre was inspect exterior and aircraft was then towed to the gate by maintenance. Callback conversation with reporter on can 491977 revealed the following information: callback revealed that the failure was a hydraulic line in the left main gear retraction system. The leak was slow enough that flaps were raised normally before EICAS warning was received. During performance of irregular operation checklist it was discovered that the power xfer unit did not work so that landing gear was lowered using the standby system. Checklists were adequate for the operation.
