Narrative:
Upon reaching taxiway a, en route to runway 28 at yul, both captain and first officer clearly understood a clearance, into position and hold, and acknowledged the clearance as such. As we stopped in position on runway 28, the tower controller called for us to hold our position, which we thought was an odd call. After takeoff, the controller remarked that he did not recall clearing us into position. We replied that we heard and acknowledged the clearance. He did not indicate that any further action was necessary. No other aircraft or vehicle were involved.
