Narrative:
Requested progressive taxi from ground control due to airport unfamiliarity. Clearance was to turn left on taxiway C and hold short runway 23. While taxiing I diverted my attention to set navigation radios to match our departure clearance. As I looked up the student was crossing a runway. I asked the student which runway and she replied that she had cleared the area prior to crossing but did not know which runway it was. Examination of the airport diagram revealed it was runway 23. I had the student stop, turn around and counseled her on the importance of reading airport signs and markings. I contacted ground control to apologize and explain the situation. To avoid this occurrence in the future, I'll maintain attention outside the airplane when in motion. No traffic conflicts occurred.

Title: A C172 FLT INSTRUCTOR AND STUDENT TAXIING FOR TKOF AT MCN CROSSED A RWY THEY WERE TO HOLD SHORT OF.
Narrative: REQUESTED PROGRESSIVE TAXI FROM GND CTL DUE TO ARPT UNFAMILIARITY. CLRNC WAS TO TURN L ON TXWY C AND HOLD SHORT RWY 23. WHILE TAXIING I DIVERTED MY ATTN TO SET NAV RADIOS TO MATCH OUR DEP CLRNC. AS I LOOKED UP THE STUDENT WAS XING A RWY. I ASKED THE STUDENT WHICH RWY AND SHE REPLIED THAT SHE HAD CLRED THE AREA PRIOR TO XING BUT DID NOT KNOW WHICH RWY IT WAS. EXAMINATION OF THE ARPT DIAGRAM REVEALED IT WAS RWY 23. I HAD THE STUDENT STOP, TURN AROUND AND COUNSELED HER ON THE IMPORTANCE OF READING ARPT SIGNS AND MARKINGS. I CONTACTED GND CTL TO APOLOGIZE AND EXPLAIN THE SIT. TO AVOID THIS OCCURRENCE IN THE FUTURE, I'LL MAINTAIN ATTN OUTSIDE THE AIRPLANE WHEN IN MOTION. NO TFC CONFLICTS OCCURRED.
