Narrative:

As I was climbing this C172 slowly to 6500 ft, I was also trying to understand the GPS navigation system installed and watch for numerous traffic and trying to contact socal approach for VFR advisories. I inadvertently lost awareness of the boundaries of the restr area that was in use for pendleton marine air base. Once able to contact and be radar idented by socal approach, they told me my position. This position was about 4 mi south of the point of my intended route. Although socal made no mention of my proximity to the restr airspace, I was concerned about my closeness to the restr airspace. There were no adverse happenings to my flight as I am aware. But I was not where I wanted to be in terms of distance from the restr airspace. In the future, even though WX was cavu and my destination (catalina island) was in sight, I will continue to monitor my progress using the chart so as not to come close or enter restr airspace. I let my guard down due to a beautiful day and great scenery.

Narrative: AS I WAS CLBING THIS C172 SLOWLY TO 6500 FT, I WAS ALSO TRYING TO UNDERSTAND THE GPS NAV SYS INSTALLED AND WATCH FOR NUMEROUS TFC AND TRYING TO CONTACT SOCAL APCH FOR VFR ADVISORIES. THIS POS WAS ABOUT 4 MI S OF THE POINT OF MY INTENDED RTE. ALTHOUGH SOCAL MADE NO MENTION OF MY PROX TO THE RESTR AIRSPACE, I WAS CONCERNED ABOUT MY CLOSENESS TO THE RESTR AIRSPACE. THERE WERE NO ADVERSE HAPPENINGS TO MY FLT AS I AM AWARE. BUT I WAS NOT WHERE I WANTED TO BE IN TERMS OF DISTANCE FROM THE RESTR AIRSPACE.
