Narrative:
Taxiing out, ground control advised us to contact tower. We both believed that we heard that we were cleared for takeoff. I then asked for wind check. We proceeded to taxi onto runway for takeoff. As we were turning to line up, tower asked what we were doing and advised that we had not been cleared for takeoff. He then issued takeoff clearance. No conflict. I tried to contact tower chief to see if we could review tapes on why both of us believed that we had clearance but was unavailable due to vacation.
