Narrative:

Approach control changed landing runway as we neared fix and about to level at 12000 ft. First officer was PNF and while changing runway, he also deleted the arrival. I was PF and looked down twice and thought that he was going to activate. He didn't. Plane was in descent and reverted to vertical speed mode, taking us 500-600 ft below the 12000 ft specified altitude. I activated correct approach, noticed altitude and immediately climbed back to 12000 ft. No conflict. No comment by approach control. No altitude warning in cockpit.
