Narrative:
Told to hold short of runway 7 for takeoff at A1 awaiting several arrs. After some time, I heard 'taxi onto position and hold' -- I thought I heard 'position and hold runway 7,' which I did. Evidently, he had said 'cross runway 7, position and hold runway 12,' because another aircraft on final to runway 7 had to go around. I really did not hear the controller say to cross runway 7 and go to runway 12. Though the controller's instruction did seem garbled. My passenger (also a pilot) was also unclr as to what was said. I deeply regret having misunderstood this instruction. To correct problem: 1) ask for clarification -- though garbled, I thought I had correctly understood. 2) look more carefully for aircraft on final. 3) controller be clrer -- add phrase such as 'new runway assignment' or 'can you take runway 12?' note: the airport was busy and breaking in was difficult, but should have done it. Operations were being conducted on runway 7, runway 12 and runway 30. Tours were landing on runway 30 which added to confusion regarding runway 12 use.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: C310 PLT HAD RWY INCURSION ON RWY 7 AT VGT.
Narrative: TOLD TO HOLD SHORT OF RWY 7 FOR TKOF AT A1 AWAITING SEVERAL ARRS. AFTER SOME TIME, I HEARD 'TAXI ONTO POS AND HOLD' -- I THOUGHT I HEARD 'POS AND HOLD RWY 7,' WHICH I DID. EVIDENTLY, HE HAD SAID 'CROSS RWY 7, POS AND HOLD RWY 12,' BECAUSE ANOTHER ACFT ON FINAL TO RWY 7 HAD TO GO AROUND. I REALLY DID NOT HEAR THE CTLR SAY TO CROSS RWY 7 AND GO TO RWY 12. THOUGH THE CTLR'S INSTRUCTION DID SEEM GARBLED. MY PAX (ALSO A PLT) WAS ALSO UNCLR AS TO WHAT WAS SAID. I DEEPLY REGRET HAVING MISUNDERSTOOD THIS INSTRUCTION. TO CORRECT PROB: 1) ASK FOR CLARIFICATION -- THOUGH GARBLED, I THOUGHT I HAD CORRECTLY UNDERSTOOD. 2) LOOK MORE CAREFULLY FOR ACFT ON FINAL. 3) CTLR BE CLRER -- ADD PHRASE SUCH AS 'NEW RWY ASSIGNMENT' OR 'CAN YOU TAKE RWY 12?' NOTE: THE ARPT WAS BUSY AND BREAKING IN WAS DIFFICULT, BUT SHOULD HAVE DONE IT. OPS WERE BEING CONDUCTED ON RWY 7, RWY 12 AND RWY 30. TOURS WERE LNDG ON RWY 30 WHICH ADDED TO CONFUSION REGARDING RWY 12 USE.
