Narrative:
While crew was managing a pressurization problem, a passenger approached cockpit and complained of smoke in cabin, and extreme heat on floor area immediately behind main spar. Crew confirmed smoke in cabin, complied with QRH. Notified ATC and in the interest of safety, because of the nature of the problem, declared an emergency. Notified company. Landed as soon as practical. All appropriate company procedures and checklists were complied with. Callback conversation with reporter revealed the following information: the reporter stated the cause of the light smoke in the cabin was floor carpeting covering the cabin heating duct. The reporter said the floor carpeting was incorrectly installed. The reporter said the smoke was light some what like cigar smoke in a room.
