Narrative:
I was cleared to taxi to runway 30 at elko. I went along taxiway a towards runway 30. Being unfamiliar with the airport, I asked the controller where I should do my run-up. He replied that I should do it where I was. I did so. When I was finished, I saw a twin coming towards me on taxiway a, so I decided to finish taxiing to runway 30 to get out of the way, thinking that I had room to do so while remaining on txwys. (On the flight guide map I had with me and commercial map, I subsequently examined, it appeared that the taxiway extended north towards the runway before the runway proper began.) I failed to register that in doing so I crossed the approach threshold for runway 30. Fortunately, no harm done, but tower advised me of my transgression and then cleared me to go.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: A C172 PLT, UNFAMILIAR WITH EKO ARPT, TAXIED ONTO THE ACTIVE RWY.
Narrative: I WAS CLRED TO TAXI TO RWY 30 AT ELKO. I WENT ALONG TXWY A TOWARDS RWY 30. BEING UNFAMILIAR WITH THE ARPT, I ASKED THE CTLR WHERE I SHOULD DO MY RUN-UP. HE REPLIED THAT I SHOULD DO IT WHERE I WAS. I DID SO. WHEN I WAS FINISHED, I SAW A TWIN COMING TOWARDS ME ON TXWY A, SO I DECIDED TO FINISH TAXIING TO RWY 30 TO GET OUT OF THE WAY, THINKING THAT I HAD ROOM TO DO SO WHILE REMAINING ON TXWYS. (ON THE FLT GUIDE MAP I HAD WITH ME AND COMMERCIAL MAP, I SUBSEQUENTLY EXAMINED, IT APPEARED THAT THE TXWY EXTENDED N TOWARDS THE RWY BEFORE THE RWY PROPER BEGAN.) I FAILED TO REGISTER THAT IN DOING SO I CROSSED THE APCH THRESHOLD FOR RWY 30. FORTUNATELY, NO HARM DONE, BUT TWR ADVISED ME OF MY TRANSGRESSION AND THEN CLRED ME TO GO.
