Narrative:
Our lead flight attendant had lost her voice due to illness. I became aware in the deicing pad that she had another flight attendant doing her PA announcements. I was concerned about communications in the event of an emergency. I decided to have her replaced as lead. In discussing this change with the other 2 flight attendants, they were also seriously concerned about her ability to carry out her duties, even as being no longer lead flight attendant. We decided that she would be unable to shout commands or brief passenger during an emergency. I made the decision to taxi back to the gate and have her replaced. When I asked her why she came to work when she obviously couldn't do her job, she said that she would be punished for calling in sick during a busy period.
