Narrative:
Put into position and hold runway 15R at bwi, looked out and saw aircraft that looked like it was on final to our runway from the opposite direction (33L) coming at us. Told tower it looked like aircraft was on final coming opposite direction. Tower sent other aircraft around from about 1-2 NM final. I believe tower may have made a mistake by clearing us on to hold with traffic cleared for an opposite direction approach. Callback conversation with reporter revealed the following information: reporter stated that he believes the other B737 was on another frequency because he never heard the tower or the other aircraft. Reporter also said that because he had to alert the tower of the landing B737, he has reason to believe that the tower personnel were unaware of what was happening on their runways.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: B737 FLC ABOUT TO TAKE OFF FROM RWY 15R AT BWI, ALERTS ATC OF A B737 MAKING AN APCH TO THE OPPOSITE END OF THE SAME RWY.
Narrative: PUT INTO POS AND HOLD RWY 15R AT BWI, LOOKED OUT AND SAW ACFT THAT LOOKED LIKE IT WAS ON FINAL TO OUR RWY FROM THE OPPOSITE DIRECTION (33L) COMING AT US. TOLD TWR IT LOOKED LIKE ACFT WAS ON FINAL COMING OPPOSITE DIRECTION. TWR SENT OTHER ACFT AROUND FROM ABOUT 1-2 NM FINAL. I BELIEVE TWR MAY HAVE MADE A MISTAKE BY CLEARING US ON TO HOLD WITH TFC CLRED FOR AN OPPOSITE DIRECTION APCH. CALLBACK CONVERSATION WITH RPTR REVEALED THE FOLLOWING INFO: RPTR STATED THAT HE BELIEVES THE OTHER B737 WAS ON ANOTHER FREQ BECAUSE HE NEVER HEARD THE TWR OR THE OTHER ACFT. RPTR ALSO SAID THAT BECAUSE HE HAD TO ALERT THE TWR OF THE LNDG B737, HE HAS REASON TO BELIEVE THAT THE TWR PERSONNEL WERE UNAWARE OF WHAT WAS HAPPENING ON THEIR RWYS.
