Narrative:
On a training flight, a student and I were practicing takeoffs and lndgs. We were on the left downwind to runway 10 when the tower advised us that we were #2, following a cherokee on the opposite downwind. We had the traffic in sight and advised the tower. We were then cleared for the option. Meanwhile, the C310 called inbound 4.9 mi northwest. The tower advised the pilot to report 2 mi northwest for left traffic runway 10. As the #1 cherokee traffic passed abeam us on final, we turned left base. Once established on base, my student and I both noticed the C310 on final and on a collision course with us. I took control of the aircraft and entered a rapid descent. We continued on a heading perpendicular to final as we descended. The C310 passed about 100 ft above us and about 300 ft behind.

Title: PA28 INSTRUCTOR INITIATES EVASIVE MANEUVER TO AVOID C310 ON STRAIGHT-IN APCH TO LAF.
Narrative: ON A TRAINING FLT, A STUDENT AND I WERE PRACTICING TKOFS AND LNDGS. WE WERE ON THE L DOWNWIND TO RWY 10 WHEN THE TWR ADVISED US THAT WE WERE #2, FOLLOWING A CHEROKEE ON THE OPPOSITE DOWNWIND. WE HAD THE TFC IN SIGHT AND ADVISED THE TWR. WE WERE THEN CLRED FOR THE OPTION. MEANWHILE, THE C310 CALLED INBOUND 4.9 MI NW. THE TWR ADVISED THE PLT TO RPT 2 MI NW FOR L TFC RWY 10. AS THE #1 CHEROKEE TFC PASSED ABEAM US ON FINAL, WE TURNED L BASE. ONCE ESTABLISHED ON BASE, MY STUDENT AND I BOTH NOTICED THE C310 ON FINAL AND ON A COLLISION COURSE WITH US. I TOOK CTL OF THE ACFT AND ENTERED A RAPID DSCNT. WE CONTINUED ON A HDG PERPENDICULAR TO FINAL AS WE DSNDED. THE C310 PASSED ABOUT 100 FT ABOVE US AND ABOUT 300 FT BEHIND.
