Narrative:
On a flight from palm springs to las vegas, we deviated from our cleared routing by flying our filed routing. Our clearance took us from goffs via V538 to the las VOR. We, however, stayed on V514 for the boulder city VOR as was our filed route. ZLA pointed out that we had been cleared via V538 and gave us a vector on course. There was no traffic or airspace conflict. In looking at the events leading up to this point, it is easy to see how this situation arose. First, the crew had only been together for a day. Second, the first officer was brand new. Third, and most importantly, the first officer was confused as to the differences between filed and cleared rtes. The first officer had a list of 'canned' rtes. Some of these were apparently out-of-date. The actual filed flight plan is on the dispatch release. This confusion led to some miscom between myself and the first officer. For clarification, our company policy states the pilot obtaining the clearance will read it to the other pilot during the checklist. Apparently, I understood 'cleared as filed.' as PIC, should have monitored the first officer more closely. I should have realized that the first officer was unsure of the clearance received and asked clearance delivery for clarification.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: E120 CREW HAD TRACK DEV IN ZLA CLASS E AIRSPACE.
Narrative: ON A FLT FROM PALM SPRINGS TO LAS VEGAS, WE DEVIATED FROM OUR CLRED ROUTING BY FLYING OUR FILED ROUTING. OUR CLRNC TOOK US FROM GOFFS VIA V538 TO THE LAS VOR. WE, HOWEVER, STAYED ON V514 FOR THE BOULDER CITY VOR AS WAS OUR FILED RTE. ZLA POINTED OUT THAT WE HAD BEEN CLRED VIA V538 AND GAVE US A VECTOR ON COURSE. THERE WAS NO TFC OR AIRSPACE CONFLICT. IN LOOKING AT THE EVENTS LEADING UP TO THIS POINT, IT IS EASY TO SEE HOW THIS SIT AROSE. FIRST, THE CREW HAD ONLY BEEN TOGETHER FOR A DAY. SECOND, THE FO WAS BRAND NEW. THIRD, AND MOST IMPORTANTLY, THE FO WAS CONFUSED AS TO THE DIFFERENCES BTWN FILED AND CLRED RTES. THE FO HAD A LIST OF 'CANNED' RTES. SOME OF THESE WERE APPARENTLY OUT-OF-DATE. THE ACTUAL FILED FLT PLAN IS ON THE DISPATCH RELEASE. THIS CONFUSION LED TO SOME MISCOM BTWN MYSELF AND THE FO. FOR CLARIFICATION, OUR COMPANY POLICY STATES THE PLT OBTAINING THE CLRNC WILL READ IT TO THE OTHER PLT DURING THE CHKLIST. APPARENTLY, I UNDERSTOOD 'CLRED AS FILED.' AS PIC, SHOULD HAVE MONITORED THE FO MORE CLOSELY. I SHOULD HAVE REALIZED THAT THE FO WAS UNSURE OF THE CLRNC RECEIVED AND ASKED CLRNC DELIVERY FOR CLARIFICATION.
