Narrative:
I volunteered to do the walkaround, the first officer responded 'I am going outside anyway.' I responded 'ok.' the first officer thought I was going to do the walkaround and I thought he was going to do the walkaround. Not until we were at cruise did we realize we departed without a preflight. The flight was normal. The confusion was caused by a misunderstanding. The communication problem occurred as the passenger were exiting the aircraft, and we were thanking the flight attendant. The mistake was an honest mistake -- I did not think we had a problem and neither did the first officer. A simple communication problem can result in an error.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: ACR MLG FLC DID NOT MAKE A WALKAROUND PREFLT INSPECTION AS PLANNED DUE TO THE ONE BELIEVING THAT THE OTHER HAD CONDUCTED IT.
Narrative: I VOLUNTEERED TO DO THE WALKAROUND, THE FO RESPONDED 'I AM GOING OUTSIDE ANYWAY.' I RESPONDED 'OK.' THE FO THOUGHT I WAS GOING TO DO THE WALKAROUND AND I THOUGHT HE WAS GOING TO DO THE WALKAROUND. NOT UNTIL WE WERE AT CRUISE DID WE REALIZE WE DEPARTED WITHOUT A PREFLT. THE FLT WAS NORMAL. THE CONFUSION WAS CAUSED BY A MISUNDERSTANDING. THE COM PROB OCCURRED AS THE PAX WERE EXITING THE ACFT, AND WE WERE THANKING THE FLT ATTENDANT. THE MISTAKE WAS AN HONEST MISTAKE -- I DID NOT THINK WE HAD A PROB AND NEITHER DID THE FO. A SIMPLE COM PROB CAN RESULT IN AN ERROR.
