Narrative:
While descending out of salt lake, we encountered light turbulence. I decided to 'zoom' the aircraft up to clear a cloud deck above and ahead of us. I told the captain I was going to slow to 250 KTS and use maximum climb power. We did not inform ATC that we were going to slow. A few mins after we started our attempt to clear the cloud deck, an aircraft behind us remarked about severe turbulence. It would have been our wake that caused this turbulence. We accelerated to normal climb. After landing, we called our company to see if any problems were reported to operations center since we believed that aircraft behind us on the climb was a company aircraft. None were reported. It is mandatory to report a large change of airspeed to ATC to avoid this situation. I will do so in the future.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: B757 FO SLOWED ACFT AND CLBED AT A STEEP ANGLE TO AVOID ENTERING CLOUDS WITHOUT NOTIFYING ARTCC CTLR.
Narrative: WHILE DSNDING OUT OF SALT LAKE, WE ENCOUNTERED LIGHT TURB. I DECIDED TO 'ZOOM' THE ACFT UP TO CLR A CLOUD DECK ABOVE AND AHEAD OF US. I TOLD THE CAPT I WAS GOING TO SLOW TO 250 KTS AND USE MAX CLB PWR. WE DID NOT INFORM ATC THAT WE WERE GOING TO SLOW. A FEW MINS AFTER WE STARTED OUR ATTEMPT TO CLR THE CLOUD DECK, AN ACFT BEHIND US REMARKED ABOUT SEVERE TURB. IT WOULD HAVE BEEN OUR WAKE THAT CAUSED THIS TURB. WE ACCELERATED TO NORMAL CLB. AFTER LNDG, WE CALLED OUR COMPANY TO SEE IF ANY PROBS WERE RPTED TO OPS CTR SINCE WE BELIEVED THAT ACFT BEHIND US ON THE CLB WAS A COMPANY ACFT. NONE WERE RPTED. IT IS MANDATORY TO RPT A LARGE CHANGE OF AIRSPD TO ATC TO AVOID THIS SIT. I WILL DO SO IN THE FUTURE.
