Narrative:
My reserve duty began at XA00 (all times MST) and I slept till about XB30. At XD00, I received a call to report at XE00. Our third and last leg of the day was phx-den, but low visibility caused our eventual diversion to cos. We arrived at XM16. I called crew scheduling from operations and was asked to call back in 20 mins for further instructions. Shortly after XN00, I called scheduling, but received only busy signals. I made several attempts, redialing during each. During these attempts, a flight release for our aircraft began printing. This was for a cos-phx extra-section departing at XO00. Because this release printed, I stopped trying to contact scheduling. Fueling and manual weight and balance computation delayed our departure. My discussions of duty time limits with the first officer focused only on our report times -- his XD40, mine XE00. I was unaware that my XA00 reserve duty was the limiting factor. I phoned dispatch and obtained an amendment to our release to extend it beyond the 1 hour limit. We finally pushed at XP20 and arrived in phx at XR05 (release time XR20). Subsequently, I learned that my far duty time at XA00 and was limited to 16 hours. I also learned that scheduling and dispatch canceled my flight at roughly XO30 because of duty limits. (As yet, there is no explanation for the fact that we were not notified of this cancellation.) I had not held reserve duty for several yrs. My carrier has published no information on changes in duty time limitations. For these reasons, I was unaware of recent developments in the interpretation of far 121.471 pertaining to reserve duty limits. To correct this situation, my carrier has given me 'special purpose' training on this far.

Title: A320 CREW HAD TRIP CANCELED TO KEEP THE CREW FROM EXCEEDING THE MAX DUTY TIME.
Narrative: MY RESERVE DUTY BEGAN AT XA00 (ALL TIMES MST) AND I SLEPT TILL ABOUT XB30. AT XD00, I RECEIVED A CALL TO RPT AT XE00. OUR THIRD AND LAST LEG OF THE DAY WAS PHX-DEN, BUT LOW VISIBILITY CAUSED OUR EVENTUAL DIVERSION TO COS. WE ARRIVED AT XM16. I CALLED CREW SCHEDULING FROM OPS AND WAS ASKED TO CALL BACK IN 20 MINS FOR FURTHER INSTRUCTIONS. SHORTLY AFTER XN00, I CALLED SCHEDULING, BUT RECEIVED ONLY BUSY SIGNALS. I MADE SEVERAL ATTEMPTS, REDIALING DURING EACH. DURING THESE ATTEMPTS, A FLT RELEASE FOR OUR ACFT BEGAN PRINTING. THIS WAS FOR A COS-PHX EXTRA-SECTION DEPARTING AT XO00. BECAUSE THIS RELEASE PRINTED, I STOPPED TRYING TO CONTACT SCHEDULING. FUELING AND MANUAL WT AND BAL COMPUTATION DELAYED OUR DEP. MY DISCUSSIONS OF DUTY TIME LIMITS WITH THE FO FOCUSED ONLY ON OUR RPT TIMES -- HIS XD40, MINE XE00. I WAS UNAWARE THAT MY XA00 RESERVE DUTY WAS THE LIMITING FACTOR. I PHONED DISPATCH AND OBTAINED AN AMENDMENT TO OUR RELEASE TO EXTEND IT BEYOND THE 1 HR LIMIT. WE FINALLY PUSHED AT XP20 AND ARRIVED IN PHX AT XR05 (RELEASE TIME XR20). SUBSEQUENTLY, I LEARNED THAT MY FAR DUTY TIME AT XA00 AND WAS LIMITED TO 16 HRS. I ALSO LEARNED THAT SCHEDULING AND DISPATCH CANCELED MY FLT AT ROUGHLY XO30 BECAUSE OF DUTY LIMITS. (AS YET, THERE IS NO EXPLANATION FOR THE FACT THAT WE WERE NOT NOTIFIED OF THIS CANCELLATION.) I HAD NOT HELD RESERVE DUTY FOR SEVERAL YRS. MY CARRIER HAS PUBLISHED NO INFO ON CHANGES IN DUTY TIME LIMITATIONS. FOR THESE REASONS, I WAS UNAWARE OF RECENT DEVELOPMENTS IN THE INTERP OF FAR 121.471 PERTAINING TO RESERVE DUTY LIMITS. TO CORRECT THIS SIT, MY CARRIER HAS GIVEN ME 'SPECIAL PURPOSE' TRAINING ON THIS FAR.
