Narrative:
Approaching dia at 7000 ft MSL and configuring for landing, slats would not extend. (I did not know this was occurring.) my commands for reconfiguring and FMC inputs were being ignored as the captain began to troubleshoot. There was confusion on the flight deck regarding autoflt inputs and delegation of duties. Therefore, while hand flying and climbing to an assigned altitude of 9000 ft and trying to reset the MCP, I momentarily climbed through 9000 ft to 9400 ft. I immediately corrected. Captain should have immediately informed me of slat problem, had us break off approach, assisted in stabilizing aircraft and then work on problem.

Title: A320 CREW HAD ALT OVERSHOOT WHILE TROUBLESHOOTING THE FAILURE OF THE SLAT SYS IN D01 CLASS B AIRSPACE.
Narrative: APCHING DIA AT 7000 FT MSL AND CONFIGURING FOR LNDG, SLATS WOULD NOT EXTEND. (I DID NOT KNOW THIS WAS OCCURRING.) MY COMMANDS FOR RECONFIGURING AND FMC INPUTS WERE BEING IGNORED AS THE CAPT BEGAN TO TROUBLESHOOT. THERE WAS CONFUSION ON THE FLT DECK REGARDING AUTOFLT INPUTS AND DELEGATION OF DUTIES. THEREFORE, WHILE HAND FLYING AND CLBING TO AN ASSIGNED ALT OF 9000 FT AND TRYING TO RESET THE MCP, I MOMENTARILY CLBED THROUGH 9000 FT TO 9400 FT. I IMMEDIATELY CORRECTED. CAPT SHOULD HAVE IMMEDIATELY INFORMED ME OF SLAT PROB, HAD US BREAK OFF APCH, ASSISTED IN STABILIZING ACFT AND THEN WORK ON PROB.
