Narrative:

From deice pad to runway 28, told by ground to taxi to runway 28 on taxiway J, stay on ground frequency. On taxiway J, taxied past a sign labeled CAT I hold short. After passing sign, ground said we were 1000 ft past the runway hold short and to contact tower. Current ATIS said approachs to runway 24L/right, departures runway 28. Supplemental information from acn 504293: yul was landing runway 24L. We taxied past a sign that said 'runway 28 CAT I hold.' since runway 28 was being used for departing only, we taxied past that spot. This sign is on taxiway J facing to the east. If it is in fact the runway hold short spot, it might need to be marked differently. We agree that we did taxi past the runway 28 CAT I hold spot. Next time I will ask about any sign hold short for any runway. Lesson learned. Callback conversation with reporter acn 504294 revealed the following information: reporter advised that the PIC was acting as a check airman. The reporter, to be certified, was reviewing departure procedures when ground control advised that they had passed the runway 28 hold short point. The reporter stated the PIC had mentioned later that he had seen the sign, but interpreted the clearance to runway 28 as authority/authorized to taxi to the approach end of the runway. WX was not a factor. The reporter has not been back to cyul since the incident. The reporter is hoping for a 'different control clearance' in the future that reflects greater attention to the hold short point when departing the deicing area.

Title: S80 FLC MISS CYUL RWY 28 HOLD SHORT SIGN ON TXWY J WHEN EXITING DEICE PAD.

Narrative: FROM DEICE PAD TO RWY 28, TOLD BY GND TO TAXI TO RWY 28 ON TXWY J, STAY ON GND FREQ. ON TXWY J, TAXIED PAST A SIGN LABELED CAT I HOLD SHORT. AFTER PASSING SIGN, GND SAID WE WERE 1000 FT PAST THE RWY HOLD SHORT AND TO CONTACT TWR. CURRENT ATIS SAID APCHS TO RWY 24L/R, DEPS RWY 28. SUPPLEMENTAL INFO FROM ACN 504293: YUL WAS LNDG RWY 24L. WE TAXIED PAST A SIGN THAT SAID 'RWY 28 CAT I HOLD.' SINCE RWY 28 WAS BEING USED FOR DEPARTING ONLY, WE TAXIED PAST THAT SPOT. THIS SIGN IS ON TXWY J FACING TO THE E. IF IT IS IN FACT THE RWY HOLD SHORT SPOT, IT MIGHT NEED TO BE MARKED DIFFERENTLY. WE AGREE THAT WE DID TAXI PAST THE RWY 28 CAT I HOLD SPOT. NEXT TIME I WILL ASK ABOUT ANY SIGN HOLD SHORT FOR ANY RWY. LESSON LEARNED. CALLBACK CONVERSATION WITH RPTR ACN 504294 REVEALED THE FOLLOWING INFO: RPTR ADVISED THAT THE PIC WAS ACTING AS A CHK AIRMAN. THE RPTR, TO BE CERTIFIED, WAS REVIEWING DEP PROCS WHEN GND CTL ADVISED THAT THEY HAD PASSED THE RWY 28 HOLD SHORT POINT. THE RPTR STATED THE PIC HAD MENTIONED LATER THAT HE HAD SEEN THE SIGN, BUT INTERPED THE CLRNC TO RWY 28 AS AUTH TO TAXI TO THE APCH END OF THE RWY. WX WAS NOT A FACTOR. THE RPTR HAS NOT BEEN BACK TO CYUL SINCE THE INCIDENT. THE RPTR IS HOPING FOR A 'DIFFERENT CTL CLRNC' IN THE FUTURE THAT REFLECTS GREATER ATTN TO THE HOLD SHORT POINT WHEN DEPARTING THE DEICING AREA.
