Narrative:
Initial segment of VFR flight around ord class B to travel south down lake michigan shoreline. Level at 2700 ft MSL and receiving advisories from ord approach. Monitoring distance from ord on DME. Saw 11.2 DME, became distraction. Next scan showed 9.9 DME. Turned 30 degrees north immediately and was greater than 10 DME in less than 1 min. Had new passenger and was pointing out landmarks. No mention from ord approach.

Narrative: INITIAL SEGMENT OF VFR FLT AROUND ORD CLASS B TO TRAVEL S DOWN LAKE MICHIGAN SHORELINE. LEVEL AT 2700 FT MSL AND RECEIVING ADVISORIES FROM ORD APCH. MONITORING DISTANCE FROM ORD ON DME. SAW 11.2 DME, BECAME DISTR. NEXT SCAN SHOWED 9.9 DME. TURNED 30 DEGS N IMMEDIATELY AND WAS GREATER THAN 10 DME IN LESS THAN 1 MIN. HAD NEW PAX AND WAS POINTING OUT LANDMARKS.
