Narrative:

Upon being vectored onto the final approach course for the ILS runway 34L at seatac, we experienced a failure of our heading and on our HSI. We were queried by ATC because we flew well beyond our assigned heading for the vector to final. After a min or two of confusion, my student and I both recognized the problem. I called ATC and notified them of our gyro failure. They gave us a no gyro ILS approach. We broke out about 5 mi from the airport, at which time we continued on the visual for runway 34L. Not sure of anything we could have done better after the situation occurred. There were no indications prior to the failure that I noted to have prevented the situation. I feel our response and corrective action was both timely and appropriate. The failure occurred in the turn for the vector to final. As we were being bumped around quite a bit, I and my student did not notice the card on the HSI had locked up.
