Narrative:

While at cruise altitude, engine instrument display unit flashed bright white, display went blank, followed by fumes, then smoke. Performed emergency procedures for 'electrical smoke or fire.' smoke cleared, and landed at nearest suitable airport, which was our destination. Log entry and company crew report were made. Discussed event with director of operations, and was advised he would notify the NTSB (per NTSB 830) of event on behalf of the operator/air carrier. Also discussed event with maintenance control and followed up the next day to find that a faulty, previous installation had occurred, thus causing the problem.
