Flying la grange STAR into atl. After tiroe intersection, were given vector off course and asked by approach if we were on the STAR. Realized at this point that the captain had strung the flight plan from tiroe to the FAF -- should have either strung plan to atl VOR first, or taken autoplt out of navigation mode before leaving tiroe.

Title: MD11 CAPT INCORRECTLY ENTERS ATL LA GRANGE STAR RESULTING IN COURSE DEV. OBSERVED AND CHALLENGED BY A80 APCH CTL.
Narrative: FLYING LA GRANGE STAR INTO ATL. AFTER TIROE INTXN, WERE GIVEN VECTOR OFF COURSE AND ASKED BY APCH IF WE WERE ON THE STAR. REALIZED AT THIS POINT THAT THE CAPT HAD STRUNG THE FLT PLAN FROM TIROE TO THE FAF -- SHOULD HAVE EITHER STRUNG PLAN TO ATL VOR FIRST, OR TAKEN AUTOPLT OUT OF NAV MODE BEFORE LEAVING TIROE.
